Gutter Cleaning & Repair in Madison, WI

Madison is a city of big trees, and its gutters show it. In May, silver and red maples shed clouds of winged seeds that pack gutters and downspouts in a few days. Cottonwoods near the lakes and marshes drop fluff in June, oaks drop tassels in spring and hang onto their leaves until late fall, and the last of them come down after the first snow. Then winter brings the real test. When snow on the roof melts from attic heat and refreezes at the cold eaves, ice dams form, and clogged gutters make them worse by holding water and ice right where the roof is most vulnerable. Water backs up under the shingles and into walls and ceilings, and heavy ice can pull gutters right off the fascia.

We clean gutters by hand, removing leaves, seeds, twigs and roof grit, and bag the debris rather than leaving it on your lawn. We flush every downspout to make sure it flows freely and clear clogs at the elbows. While we're up there, we check the slope and re-hang gutters that sag or pull away, replace failing hangers, seal leaking seams and end caps, and tighten loose downspout straps. We also make sure downspouts discharge well away from the foundation, adding extensions or splash blocks where needed. If we see signs of past ice dams, like bent gutters, stained fascia or damaged shingles at the eaves, we'll point them out and talk about prevention.

What this covers

  • Hand cleaning of gutters and debris bagging
  • Downspout flushing and clog removal
  • Re-sloping and re-hanging sagging gutters
  • Hanger and fastener replacement
  • Seam, corner and end cap sealing
  • Downspout extensions and splash blocks
  • Gutter guard installation and cleaning
  • Ice-dam damage inspection at the eaves
A note from around here: Older neighborhoods like Vilas, Dudgeon-Monroe and Tenney-Lapham have huge maples and oaks over the roofs, while Monona and Shorewood Hills lake lots add cottonwood fluff and wind-blown leaves.

How a gutter cleaning & repair visit usually goes

Look and Plan

We check the roofline, gutters and downspouts from the ground and the ladder, and note any sagging, leaks or ice-dam damage before we start.

Clean by Hand

Leaves, seeds and debris are removed by hand and bagged, and the gutters are rinsed to clear grit and small debris.

Flush and Repair

Downspouts are flushed and unclogged, sagging sections re-hung with new hangers, and leaking seams and end caps sealed.

Direct the Water

We make sure downspouts carry water well away from the foundation, add extensions or splash blocks where needed, and clean up the yard.

Where the water goes after it leaves the downspout matters a lot in Madison. Many homes have basements, and downspouts that dump water right next to the foundation can lead to damp walls, leaks and sump pumps running nonstop during spring thaw and heavy summer storms. We make sure downspouts discharge at least several feet from the house and that the ground slopes away. And because storm drains here empty straight into the lakes, it helps to keep leaves and debris out of the street; the city and local lake groups encourage residents to keep leaves out of the gutter at the curb, since they wash nutrients into Mendota and Monona.

What shapes the price in Madison

The cost of gutter cleaning depends on the size and height of the house, how full the gutters are, and how easy they are to reach. A single-story ranch with light debris is quick; a two-story or story-and-a-half house with steep roof sections, packed gutters and lots of downspouts takes longer. Gutters under big trees, or ones that haven't been cleaned in years, take more time. Repairs like re-hanging, sealing seams or replacing damaged sections add to the cost. Guards need to be removed and reinstalled to clean underneath. Scheduling spring and fall cleanings together can save money.

Neighbors often ask

How often should my gutters be cleaned in Madison?

Most homes here need it at least twice a year: once in late spring after the maple seeds and oak tassels drop, and once in late fall after the leaves are down, ideally before the ground freezes. Homes under large trees may need a mid-summer check too. Cleaning before winter is the most important, since clogged gutters make ice dams worse.

Will clean gutters stop ice dams?

Clean gutters help, but they don't stop ice dams by themselves. Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof, and the water refreezes at the colder eaves. Clean gutters let meltwater drain instead of backing up, which reduces damage. The long-term fix is better attic air sealing, insulation and ventilation. We can clean and repair the gutters, use a roof rake to clear snow from the lower roof in winter, and help you understand what's causing the dams.

Are gutter guards worth it?

They can be, depending on your trees. Guards keep out large leaves but can still collect maple seeds and fine debris on top or in the mesh, so they need occasional cleaning too. In winter, some styles can hold snow and ice. We'll look at your trees and roof and recommend whether guards make sense and which type fits your situation.

Can you remove snow from my roof to prevent ice dams?

We can rake snow off the lower few feet of the roof using a roof rake from the ground or a ladder, which removes the snow that would otherwise melt and refreeze at the eaves. We don't walk on snowy or icy roofs. If an ice dam has already formed and water is coming inside, we can help in the short term, but a roofer or ice-dam steaming service may be needed for heavy buildup.

Our gutters pulled away from the house after winter. Can you fix them?

Usually. Heavy ice and snow can bend hangers and pull gutters away from the fascia. We re-hang the gutters with new, stronger hangers screwed into solid wood, re-set the slope so water drains to the downspouts, and seal any seams that opened. If the fascia board behind is rotted, we'll point it out so it can be repaired before the gutters are re-attached.
