Furniture Assembly in Madison, WI

Madison moves a lot. Every August thousands of students and young professionals change apartments within a few days, graduate students and medical residents arrive from across the country, and families keep moving out to newer homes in Verona, Fitchburg and Sun Prairie. Each of those moves comes with boxes of flat-pack furniture: beds, dressers, desks, bookcases, wardrobes and the storage pieces that make small rooms work. Older houses add their own twist. Narrow stairways in bungalows and story-and-a-half homes often mean big pieces have to be built in the room where they'll live, low ceilings under knee walls limit wardrobe heights, and old floors are rarely level. Getting a twenty-step piece square, sturdy and safe in those conditions takes patience and the right tools.

We bring the tools, read the instructions so you don't have to, and build each piece square and tight, checking that drawers glide, doors line up and shelves sit level. Tall dressers, bookcases and wardrobes are anchored to the wall with the anti-tip hardware they come with or something sturdier, fastened into studs or with anchors suited to plaster or drywall, which is especially important in homes with kids. On uneven old floors we shim or adjust leveling feet so pieces don't rock. When we're done, we break down the boxes and packaging and bundle it for recycling, so the room is ready to use, not buried in cardboard.

What this covers

  • Beds, bunk beds, lofts and headboards
  • Dressers, nightstands and wardrobes
  • Desks, office chairs and standing desks
  • Cribs, changing tables and nursery furniture
  • Bookcases, media units and storage cabinets
  • Outdoor furniture, grills and play sets
  • Wall anchoring and anti-tip installation
  • Box breakdown and packaging cleanup
A note from around here: Students and new arrivals around campus, Regent Street and the near east side need beds and desks built fast at lease turnover, while growing families in Verona, Fitchburg and Sun Prairie fill nurseries, playrooms and home offices.

How a furniture assembly visit usually goes

Check the Order

We open the boxes, check every part and hardware bag against the instructions, and let you know right away if anything is missing or damaged.

Build It Right

Each piece is assembled in order, glued where the design calls for it, tightened properly and checked for square so drawers and doors run smoothly.

Place and Anchor

We set the furniture where you want it, level it on uneven floors and anchor tall or heavy pieces to the wall with proper hardware.

Clean Up

Boxes are broken down, packaging is bundled for recycling, the extra hardware is bagged and labeled for you, and the room is left clean.

The late-summer rush in Madison is real. With so many leases on the isthmus and around campus ending and beginning on the same day in mid-August, the weeks before and after are full of new mattresses, bed frames, desks and shelves going into apartments with tight stairwells and limited parking. We plan those visits carefully, bring a compact toolkit up to third-floor walk-ups, and work around the moving trucks clogging the side streets. If you're moving into a building downtown or near Regent Street, it helps to book a little ahead and let us know about elevator reservations. For families settling into a new house in the suburbs, the timing is different but the volume is similar, so we often spend a whole morning working room by room until every bed, dresser and shelf is standing.

What shapes the price in Madison

The cost of assembly depends on how many pieces you have and how complex they are. A simple nightstand or bookcase goes together quickly, while a large wardrobe with sliding doors, a loft bed, an adjustable standing desk or a full play set takes much longer. Anchoring into plaster or masonry takes more time than anchoring into drywall studs. Carrying parts up narrow stairs, building in a tight space, or working around existing furniture adds time as well. Bundling several pieces, or several rooms, into one visit is the most economical way to get everything done. If something arrives damaged or missing, we can stop and come back once the replacement arrives.

Neighbors often ask

Do you assemble furniture from any store?

Yes. We build pieces from the big flat-pack retailers, online furniture brands, office suppliers and big-box stores, along with outdoor furniture and play equipment. If you've ordered several items, we'll work through them in one visit. Having the boxes in the room where the furniture will go saves time and avoids carrying heavy finished pieces up a narrow stairway.

Will you anchor tall furniture to the wall?

Every time it calls for it. Tip-over accidents with dressers and bookcases are a real hazard for young children, so we anchor tall and heavy pieces to the wall with the included anti-tip kit or a stronger strap. We fasten into studs where possible and use anchors suited to plaster or drywall where we can't. In old plaster we drill carefully to avoid cracks.

Can you build a bed in an upstairs bedroom with a narrow staircase?

Yes, and that's often the only way it fits. Many Madison bungalows and Cape Cods have tight, turning stairs and low doorways upstairs, so we carry the parts up and build the bed, dresser or wardrobe in the room. We'll check ceiling height under the slopes first, since some tall wardrobes simply won't stand upright under a knee wall, and suggest the best spot for each piece.

Can you help set up a home office?

Yes. We assemble desks, chairs, file cabinets and bookcases, mount shelves and monitor arms, manage cords along the desk and wall, and set up standing desks so they raise and lower smoothly. Many Madison households work from home at least part of the week, and a well-built, steady office setup makes a real difference through a long winter indoors.

Do you assemble outdoor furniture and play sets?

Yes. We build patio sets, grills, storage boxes, pergola kits and children's play sets, and we level and anchor them so they stay put. Play sets get extra attention to ground anchoring, since Wisconsin's spring winds and frost can shift a set that isn't secured, and we'll check that the area around it is clear and suitable for a safe surface.
